Feed Post Dimensions

The standard instagram post size for a square feed image is 1080 by 1080 pixels, which maintains a 1:1 aspect ratio. For vertical content, the recommended dimensions are 1080 by 1350 pixels, creating a 4:5 portrait ratio that occupies the most screen space in the feed. Landscape images, less common for static posts, use a 1.91:1 ratio with dimensions of 1080 by 566 pixels. Choosing the correct ratio before exporting ensures the image does not get distorted or padded with white bars. The 4:5 portrait format is often preferred by small business accounts because it commands more visual attention without requiring the user to tap to expand the view, unlike the square format which leaves significant dead space above and below the image on modern smartphone screens.

Reels and Stories Specifications

Reels and Stories share the same vertical 9:16 aspect ratio, requiring a canvas of 1080 by 1920 pixels. This full-screen format is designed to engage users who are scrolling through their feeds or checking updates on the go. When creating content for these formats, it is crucial to keep critical text and logos within the safe zones. The top and bottom portions of the screen are often obscured by interface elements such as the search bar, profile icons, or caption fields. A safe area is typically the central 80 percent of the vertical space. Using the full 1920 pixel height for essential visual information risks having key details hidden behind the app's overlay. Consistency in this vertical format helps maintain a cohesive look across your profile, as these items often appear prominently in the stories tray and the dedicated reels tab.

Profile Grid Cropping

The profile grid displays previews of your posts in a 3:4 portrait aspect ratio, regardless of the original upload format. This means that the top and bottom of a square 1:1 image or a 4:5 portrait image will be cropped in the grid view. For example, if you upload a 1080 by 1350 pixel image, the grid preview will only show the central portion, cutting off the top and bottom edges. To ensure your main subject remains visible in the grid, design your images with the central 3:4 area in mind. Place key visual elements, such as faces or product logos, in the center of the canvas. If you use a square format, the cropping is more aggressive, potentially hiding important context if it is placed near the edges. Checking how your content looks in the grid preview before publishing is a simple step to maintain a balanced and aesthetically pleasing profile appearance.

Scheduling Your Weekly Content

Once your assets are sized correctly, the next step is organizing them for consistent publication. Planning a week of content in one sitting saves time and ensures a steady flow of posts without last-minute scrambling. Instalaz is a tool that plans and schedules Instagram posts, allowing you to set up your content in advance. It is currently on a waitlist and not open to everyone yet. The tool does not buy followers, automate comments, run ads, or promise growth. It simply helps you manage the timing and order of your posts. By preparing your images and captions in a batch, you can ensure that your profile grid remains active and well-organized. This approach removes the daily pressure of finding the right moment to publish, letting you focus on creating high-quality content that fits the established dimensions.
