Accessing the Scheduling Feature
You can schedule Instagram posts directly within the mobile app for professional accounts. This built-in tool allows you to set a specific date and time for your content to go live later.
First, ensure your account is switched to a professional type. Go to your profile, tap the three lines in the top right corner, and select Account and type. If you are on a personal account, switch to Business or Creator. This step is mandatory; personal accounts do not have access to native scheduling tools.
Supported Formats and Limits
Instagram currently permits scheduling for several content types. You can schedule standard photo posts, carousel posts, and Reels. This is particularly useful for planning a week’s worth of short-form video content in one sitting.
There are limitations to what you can automate. Stories cannot be scheduled using the native app feature. Additionally, live videos cannot be scheduled. The platform also imposes a time limit on how far in advance you can queue a post. While the exact window may vary, you generally cannot schedule content for dates that are too distant in the future. Check the date picker in the app to see the available range.

Step-by-Step Scheduling Process
Once you have your media ready, follow these steps to set the publication time. The process is consistent across photos and Reels.
- Tap the + icon to create a new post.
- Select your photo or video and apply any filters or edits.
- On the final screen before posting, look for the Advanced settings option. On some versions, this is a toggle switch.
- Tap Schedule post.
- Choose your desired date and time from the calendar interface.
- Tap Next or Done to confirm.
Your post will now appear in your draft folder with a scheduled status. You can edit or delete it before the scheduled time, but you cannot change the schedule once it is set.
Common Issues and Workarounds
If the scheduling option is greyed out or missing, check your account type again. Ensure you are not using a personal account. Also, verify that you are not trying to schedule a Story, as this format is not supported by the native tool.
Some users report that certain advanced editing features are disabled when a post is scheduled. If you need specific audio or filter combinations that are not saving correctly, consider posting immediately or using a third-party planner. For a deeper look at native tools, refer to the official Instagram help guide.
If you find yourself managing multiple accounts or need a more robust planning interface, tools like Instalaz can help streamline the workflow. It is currently on a waitlist, but it offers a dedicated space for planning and scheduling posts without the app’s interface constraints.
