Instagram Image Sizes That Do Not Get Cropped
Feed, story and reel dimensions, and where the safe area sits for text.

In this guide
Feed Post Dimensions
The standard Instagram image size for feed posts is 1080 x 1350 pixels, which uses the 4:5 vertical ratio. This format fills the maximum vertical space on mobile screens without being cropped in the grid or detail view.
While square images at 1080 x 1080 pixels remain supported, they occupy less screen real estate than the vertical option. Horizontal images are not recommended for the main feed because Instagram will crop them to fit the square or vertical frame, often cutting off important visual elements. For consistent branding, stick to the 4:5 ratio for all single-image feed posts.
When designing these images, keep critical text and logos within the central 80% of the canvas. The top and bottom edges of the image are safe, but the sides can be slightly obscured depending on the device bezel. Using a 1080-pixel width ensures the image remains sharp on high-resolution displays without excessive file size.
Story and Reel Specifications
Instagram Stories and Reels both use a 9:16 vertical aspect ratio, with a recommended resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. This full-screen format is standard for short-form video content. If you upload a different ratio, Instagram will add black bars or crop the image to force it into the 9:16 frame.
For Stories, the interface overlays interactive elements such as the reply bar, username, and time indicator. These UI elements occupy the top and bottom approximately 250 pixels of the vertical space. To prevent text from being hidden behind these controls, keep all essential information in the middle 50% of the canvas.
Reels have a similar layout, but the right side is reserved for the action buttons like like, comment, and share. Avoid placing text or key visual details in the rightmost 150 pixels. The bottom area also hosts the caption and audio information, so keep the lower third clear of important content. This ensures your message is visible regardless of the user’s device size.
Safe Areas for Text Placement
Every Instagram format has a safe zone where text remains visible without interference from app interfaces. For feed posts, the entire 1080 x 1350 pixel area is generally safe, but a margin of 100 pixels on all sides provides a buffer for different screen curvatures and bezels.
In Stories and Reels, the danger zones are the top 250 pixels and the bottom 300 pixels. The top zone contains the profile avatar and story progress bars, while the bottom zone holds the caption, audio track, and reply input. Placing headlines in the center vertical band ensures they are not obscured. If you must use the edges, test the final export on a physical device to confirm visibility.
Carousels follow the same rules as single feed posts. Each slide must maintain the 1080 x 1350 pixel dimension. Inconsistent sizing across a carousel will cause Instagram to crop individual slides unevenly, breaking the visual flow. Standardise your template dimensions before exporting any multi-slide content.
Scheduling Your Content Plan
Once your assets are sized correctly, the next step is organising them for release. Managing a week of content manually is time-consuming, especially when balancing design and copy. A structured approach ensures you do not forget to post or upload files with incorrect dimensions at the last moment.
Instalaz allows you to plan and schedule Instagram posts, so a week of content takes one sitting. It is currently on a waitlist and not open to everyone yet. The tool focuses on planning and scheduling only. It does not buy followers, automate comments, run ads or promise growth. By preparing your correctly sized images in advance, you maintain consistency without daily pressure.
